NBR 14725 is the most important regulation regarding the application of the GHS - Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals in Brazil since it describes all the criteria for classifying chemical products and contains the instructions for preparing the SDS and the Label.
This regulation is going to be updated and the upcoming changes are the most important in recent times, as the standard has not undergone major changes since 2009. In recent years, only a few amendments and/or errata have been published, but a major update like this one, never.
Update of ABNT NBR 14725 - What is known so far?
- The NBR 14725 update project has already gone through 3 national consultations - in October 2020, April 2022, and the last one in October 2022.
- The new standard will no longer be divided into 4 parts as it is today. All its content will be presented in a single part, much more extensive and complete than the current version.
- The content of the new regulation will be based on the 7th GHS Revision.
- The name of the document, in Portuguese - FISPQ will be changed to FDS – Ficha com Dados de Segurança.
- All labels and FDS must be updated.
- Companies will have a period of 24 months, from publication, to adapt.
Therefore, after the publication of the new NBR 14725, companies will have a period of 2 years to adapt, which can be a tight period, depending on the number of products the company works with.
It is expected that, with the publication of the new version of Standard NBR 14725, the classification of products will be more harmonious among countries since Brazil will follow a more recent revision of the GHS.
